Is it for you?

For you if…

  • You have a knot you can point to: between the shoulder blades, at the base of the neck, in the lower back.
  • You train, run or carry weight and wake up with muscles that will not let go.
  • You have had relaxation massages and were left wanting more pressure.
  • You spend your days at a screen and your neck no longer turns the way it should.

Not for you if…

  • You are pregnant. The pregnancy massage is done side-lying, with bolsters, and avoids the right areas. Try Pregnancy Massage →
  • You mainly want to rest, without pressure points or any discomfort. Try Relaxation Massage →
  • You have a fever, an active infection, recent surgery or a history of thrombosis: talk to us before you book.
  • You have a recent injury, a herniated disc in an acute phase, or pain that radiates into an arm or a leg: speak to your doctor first.

The deep tissue massage is our firm-pressure massage, and the one people in Porto ask for by its Portuguese name, massagem terapêutica. It works the deeper layers of the muscle, slowly, on the points where tension has settled. It is not a massage for dozing through from start to finish, and it is not meant to hurt either. It is for the guest who arrives at Mirra, in Porto city centre, near Trindade metro station, and can point to where it aches. Book 50, 80 or 110 minutes, alone or for two.

Why have your deep tissue massage in Porto at Mirra

The questions. Before anything starts, your therapist asks three: where you feel the tension, what brings it on in your day, and how much pressure you want. The pressure is agreed in that conversation and checked again halfway through. Firm is not the same as maximum: firm is the level at which you breathe out and the muscle gives, not the level at which you flinch.

The time. Sixty minutes covers the whole back, the neck and the shoulders. Seventy-five adds the legs or the arms. Ninety minutes is the session for the guest who wants the whole body worked with the same attention as the spot that hurts. For two, both therapists keep the same rhythm, but each of you agrees your own pressure.

The place. We are in the Baixa, Porto’s downtown, near Trindade metro station. Opening hours: Every day, 9am–10pm. The visit includes tea after your treatment and slippers; arrive 10 minutes early to change without hurrying.

The people. A team of 7 therapists, named further down this page. The one who works on you uses hands, forearms and elbows, and knows when to switch between them.

How the deep tissue massage is done

Locating

Face down, covered. The therapist warms the area with broad strokes and warm oil and searches, with her fingers, for the points that are hard to the touch. She tells you what she finds. These first minutes feel like a relaxation massage, and that is deliberate: a cold muscle does not let pressure in.

Working

On the points you agreed, the pressure now comes from the forearm and the elbow, slowly, always along the direction of the fibres. She asks you to breathe out on the deeper passes: the muscle releases on the exhale. You may feel a clear discomfort, the kind you want, never a sharp pain. If it tips into pain, one word and the pressure drops.

Integrating

In the last minutes the strokes become broad and light again over everything that was worked, with a few gentle stretches of the arms and neck. This is what lets the body join up what was treated in parts. Water is waiting for you at the end.

The pressure scale at the top of this page runs from very light to very firm. The deep tissue massage lives in the upper half of that scale, and that is where your therapist keeps it unless you ask for something else.

Benefits

For low-back pain, reviews find short-term relief after massage, on evidence of low quality.1 For the neck, a Cochrane review describes an immediate or short-term effect on pain and tenderness.2 That is what the research supports. What we hear in the room is more concrete: the neck that turns all the way again, the shoulder that comes down. If the pain always comes back, the answer lies outside this room, with a doctor or a physiotherapist, and we say so.

Afterwards

Drink water over the next few hours. The area may feel tender the next day, as after a workout; it passes in a day or two. Skip intense exercise that day. If you booked 80 or 110 minutes and want to add the thermal circuit, take it before the massage: heat prepares the muscle for pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Does a deep tissue massage hurt?

It should not. You feel firm pressure and a clear discomfort on the tension points, the kind you want. If it tips into pain, say so and the therapist eases off at once. The pressure is always agreed with you before the massage starts.

What is the difference between deep tissue and a relaxation massage?

The pressure and the purpose. A relaxation massage is light to medium and treats the whole body evenly. Deep tissue is firm and stays on the points where tension has settled, using the forearm and elbow, slowly.

How many sessions do I need?

It depends on what causes the tension. One session releases what is there now. If the pain always returns to the same place, a session a month helps to keep it in check, but the cause is for whoever diagnoses it: a doctor or a physiotherapist.

Can I have deep tissue with a herniated disc or an injury?

Speak to your doctor first and tell us what they said. With a recent injury, a disc in an acute phase, or pain radiating into an arm or a leg, we do not apply deep pressure to that area.

Will I be sore the next day?

You may be, as after a workout, especially the first time. It passes in a day or two. Drinking water and skipping intense exercise that day helps.

Can I cancel or reschedule?

Cancellation policy: full refund of the deposit if you cancel at least 24 hours in advance. After that, the deposit is not refunded.

When should I arrive, and what is included?

Arrive 10 minutes early. Includes tea after your treatment and slippers.

How can I pay?

Card, MB Way and Multibanco. Bookings between 8pm and 11pm ask for a 30% deposit.
