Amazing body and Indian head massage my friend and I had a lovely afternoon – just what we needed after all our walking around Porto 💕
This is my second time at this amazing spa, and it is truly my favourite in Porto!
I’ve been to several places over the years but my experience at Mirra Porto Spa was exceptional.
Had an Ayurvedic massage with Bikash today and it was just bliss. All my aches and pains left!
I visited the sauna at Mirra Porto Spa last week as a walk-in without a reservation and was warmly welcomed by the hostess Giovanna.
A hot stone massage in Porto makes more sense than almost anywhere else: the city is damp, the granite holds the cold, and the heat of basalt stones warmed in water is exactly what a body wants after a day of hills. The stones are first laid along the spine, in the hands and at the feet, then the therapist uses them as warm hands, with warm oil. Heat reaches the muscle before any pressure does. It is 80 minutes, alone or for two, at Mirra, in Porto city centre, near Trindade metro station.
Why have your hot stone massage in Porto at Mirra
Controlled heat. The stones warm in a water bath at a measured temperature, not in a microwave or on a hotplate. Your therapist tests each stone on her own hand before it touches you, and lays it on a sheet or towel, never straight onto the skin in the first seconds. If one feels too hot, say so, and it goes.
The duration. Seventy-five minutes is not a whim: the stones need time to warm the muscle and the therapist needs time to swap them, because they cool. A fifty-minute stone massage would be half stones, half hurry.
The place. The Baixa, Porto’s downtown, near Trindade metro station. Opening hours: Every day, 9am–10pm. The visit includes tea after your treatment and slippers. Arrive 10 minutes early.
The people. A team of 7 therapists, named further down this page. Stones take practice: knowing how long one holds its heat, and where to rest it so it warms without bothering you.
How the hot stone massage is done
Warming
Face down, covered. The therapist begins as in a relaxation massage, with warm oil and long strokes, so the body settles into the room. Then the first stones go on: a row along the spine, over the towel, and one in each hand. They stay for a few minutes, and that is the first effect: warm weight sinking into the back.
Working with the stones
The spine stones come off and become tools. The therapist holds one in each hand and glides them, with oil, along the back, shoulders, arms and legs. The pressure is light to medium; the heat does the work, and a warm muscle lets go with half the force. The stones are swapped several times for others fresh from the water.
Settling
You turn onto your back. Smaller stones at the feet and, if you like, a warm stone on the belly or the chest under the towel. Slow strokes on the legs, arms and neck, and the last minutes in silence, the stones cooling slowly with you.
Benefits
On hot stones specifically there is no good research that separates the effect of the stones from the effect of the massage, so we tell you nothing that the science does not. On massage in general, a meta-analysis found that a single session reduced the anxiety felt in the moment.1 The rest is experience: warmth that stays in the body all the way to the street, and the feeling of having been heated from the inside. It is why most people book it in November and not in July.
Afterwards
Drink water. Dress slowly, because you leave warmer than you arrived and the street is colder than the room. This is not a massage for before the sauna: if you want the thermal circuit too, take it on another day or before the massage, never straight after.
If you want firm pressure rather than heat, the deep tissue massage. If you want the simplest thing, the relaxation massage. All our massages in Porto are on one page, and this is one of the most given: there is a voucher for one and for two.

Frequently asked questions
Do the stones burn?
No. They warm in a water bath at a measured temperature and your therapist tests each one on her own hand before it touches you, always over a towel for the first seconds. If one feels too hot, say so and it comes off at once.
How firm is a hot stone massage?
Light to medium. The heat does the work: a warm muscle lets go with half the force. If you want firm pressure on specific knots, the deep tissue massage is the right choice.
Why is it only offered as 80 minutes?
Because the stones need time to warm the muscle and they cool quickly, so they are swapped several times. In 50 minutes it would be half stones, half hurry. If you want less time, the relaxation massage comes in 50 minutes.
Can I have a hot stone massage while pregnant?
No. In pregnancy we avoid applied heat and work side-lying with bolsters: that is the pregnancy massage. Always tell us you are pregnant.
Is it good for winter in Porto?
It is the massage people book most when the damp sets in. The heat stays in the body after you leave. Bring a coat: the street is colder than the room.
Can I cancel or reschedule?
Cancellation policy: full refund of the deposit if you cancel at least 24 hours in advance. After that, the deposit is not refunded.
When should I arrive, and what is included?
Arrive 10 minutes early. Includes tea after your treatment and slippers.
How can I pay?
Card, MB Way and Multibanco. Bookings between 8pm and 11pm ask for a 30% deposit.
