A pregnancy massage in Porto, done properly, is a relaxation massage adapted to a body that is changing: fifty minutes, lying on your side, with pillows under the belly, between the knees and behind the back, and a light pressure that never goes deep. We give it from the second trimester, at Mirra, in Porto city centre, near Trindade metro station. It is the massage for a back that already carries weight, for legs that swell by evening, and for feet that put up with all of it.

Why have your pregnancy massage in Porto at Mirra

The position. On your side, always. It is the position doctors recommend for a massage in pregnancy, rather than face down or flat on your back.1 The pillows are set for you: one under the belly, one between the knees, one behind the back for support. Halfway through you turn to the other side, with help, and the pillows move with you.

The areas. The belly is not massaged. The legs are worked with light strokes towards the heart, without deep pressure; certain points on the ankles and feet are avoided, out of caution. The back, shoulders, neck, arms and feet get full attention. Your therapist knows what to avoid and tells you before she starts.

The pressure. Light to medium, without exception. This is not a massage for working out knots with an elbow; it is for the tension of carrying more weight in front and sleeping worse at night. If at any point you are not comfortable, say so, and the position or the pressure changes.

The place. The Baixa, Porto’s downtown, near Trindade metro station. Opening hours: Every day, 9am–10pm. The visit includes tea after your treatment and slippers. Arrive 10 minutes early. A team of 7 therapists, named further down this page.

How the pregnancy massage is done

Settling in

The therapist helps you onto your side and places the pillows where you need them, until you are comfortable. She asks which week you are in, what your doctor has said, where it hurts most, and whether there is anything you would rather avoid. Tell her everything, even what seems small.

Working

Warm oil, long slow strokes on the back, from the base of the spine to the shoulders, with attention to the lower back, which asks the most. Then the upper leg, from ankle to thigh, with light strokes towards the heart, and the foot. Halfway through, with help, you turn over and the other side of the body gets the same.

Settling

In the last minutes, the neck, shoulders and head with light pressure, then the hands and feet. The massage ends in silence and the therapist helps you sit up slowly, so you do not stand too fast.

Benefits

On massage in pregnancy specifically, we tell you no more than the research does, and it says little. On massage in general, a meta-analysis found that a single session reduced the anxiety felt in the moment.2 What we hear is simpler: fifty minutes in which the weight is not on you, and a night in which you sleep a little better. Speak to your doctor or midwife before booking, and tell us what they said.3

Afterwards

Drink water. Get up slowly and sit for a moment before you leave. If you feel dizzy, have contractions or anything out of the ordinary in the hours after, speak to your doctor. We do not recommend the sauna or steam room in pregnancy, so the thermal circuit waits until after the baby.

After the birth, once your doctor says you may, the relaxation massage becomes the simple choice again, and lymphatic drainage is the one most asked for on the legs. All our massages in Porto are on one page. To give it to someone who is pregnant, there is a voucher for this massage.

Frequently asked questions

From which week can I have a massage?

As a house rule, from week thirteen, that is, the second trimester, and until the end of the pregnancy. In the first trimester we prefer to wait. Always speak to your doctor or midwife first.

What position will I be in?

On your side, with pillows under the belly, between the knees and behind the back. Halfway through you turn to the other side, with help. Never face down.

Which areas are avoided?

The belly is not massaged. On the legs the strokes are light and towards the heart, with no deep pressure, and certain points on the ankles and feet are avoided. The therapist explains everything before she starts.

Can we have it as a couple?

Yes. In the couples room, with two tables side by side. Your partner can choose the relaxation massage of the same length.

Can I use the sauna or steam room while pregnant?

We do not recommend it. Intense heat in pregnancy raises doubts we would rather not run. The thermal circuit waits until after the baby.

Can I cancel or reschedule?

Cancellation policy: full refund of the deposit if you cancel at least 24 hours in advance. After that, the deposit is not refunded.

When should I arrive, and what is included?

Arrive 10 minutes early. Includes tea after your treatment and slippers.

How can I pay?

Card, MB Way and Multibanco. Bookings between 8pm and 11pm ask for a 30% deposit.
